Choline – Important to Prevent Fatty Liver, Which are Best Sources of Choline

What is Choline

Choline is an essential nutrient and methyl donor crucial for fat metabolism and liver health. It helps package and export / take out fats from the liver. The Choline deficiency is reported to directly cause fatty liver, such is importance of Choline.

Choline is one of the few nutrients, apart from Vit B12 which INDIAN population is genuinely under-consuming from food sources and a vast majority of population is deficient – hence the proliferation of clinical but largely and majorly sub-clinical liver issues including NAFLD / MASLD (the new name for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is a better term – Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease).

Indians and choline Deficiency

Choline deficiency in India is a growing concern, largely driven by the predominantly vegetarian diet and the high prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/NAFLD), which affects approximately 38.9% of Indian adults. Because the body cannot produce enough choline on its own, daily dietary intake is essential.

The Indian Context – Why Indians are Severly Deficient
  • Vegetarian Diets: Eggs, meat, and fish are the most concentrated sources of choline. Because a large portion of the Indian population follows a vegetarian diet or avoids certain non-vegetarian foods for cultural reasons, achieving the recommended daily targets can be challenging without mindful dietary planning
  • Pregnancy & Child Development: Choline is critical for fetal brain development. Deficiency during pregnancy in India has been linked to potential cognitive issues and neural tube defects in infants
  • Liver Health: Insufficient choline causes the liver to store excess fat, significantly increasing the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now known as Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD)

Why Choline Deficiency Matters

Choline is an essential nutrient and body can not make in siffucient quantities daily to meet body’s requirements and hence Choline MUST come from daily food sources.

Choline is the precursor for:

  1. phosphatidylcholine (the major phospholipid in every cell membrane and the carrier that packages VLDL out of the liver)

  2. essential for the acetylcholine that runs cholinergic neurotransmission (brain signalling)

  3. and for betaine production, a methyl donor that backstops the folate-dependent methylation system

When you take choline out of human diets in controlled feeding studies, the consequences are not subtle. Fischer, da Costa et al. (Am J Clin Nutr 2007) fed 57 healthy adults a low-choline diet for up to 42 days. 77% of men and 80% of postmenopausal women developed fatty liver or muscle damage.

Best Foods for Choline – MUST INCLUDE in Daily Diets

Sorry Vegetarians – the best Choline and Nutrient Dense foods are only from animal sources and after checking these details – must try and include Eggs in your daily diet.

  • Lamb Liver delivers 359 mg Choline per 100 gm

  • one large egg at 147 mg is the best, easy and economical option

  • Lean lamb meat at 115 mg per 100 gm

  • salmon at 75 mg per 100 gm and

  • chicken breast at 64 mg per 100 gm

Choline Daily Recommended Intake

While ICMR and India’s National Institute of Nutrition, does not have any recommendations for Daily Intake, but following international daily intakes are a better idea. These daily requirements are as under:

  • Adult Men: 550 mg/day

  • Adult Women: 425 mg/day

  • Pregnancy & Lactation: 450 mg to 550 mg/day

How to Meet Daily Choline Requirements

Eat 2 to 3 Eggs Daily and this will deliver a minimum of 450 mg of Choline apart from decent quantity and quality of protein. Indian medical fraternity first and Indian Government must consider recommending 2 to 3 eggs daily for Indian population and certainly for pregnants.

Commercial Eggs available in market are as “VEGETARIAN” as they come because these eggs are un-fertilized, table eggs meant only for human consuption. Go ahead stock on eggs and start your transition from Vegetarian to Eggetarian. Your Liver will Tahnk You!
